As an artist, I find my sources in what is around me. How people go about their lives, how a day evolves while I work on a landscape. I like drawing and painting directly from nature, so my landscapes start on site, before transferring to the studio. This world- our people, landscapes and towns, provides me with a steady stream of ideas. Within the most ordinary and everyday things that we see can often be found beauty or a great idea for a picture.
We feel Scottish but also European. Its art, design, language, culture and ideas have a profound influence. Morag and I have visited often, looking and learning. I have a studio in Dumfries where I create throughout the year and for several summers past I have also drawn and painted in the south of France.
Getting to know John and Morag when I was a young man helped to give me the confidence and determination to become an artist. They were good people to know- strong, outward looking and confident. I went to Art School (GSA) in the ’70s and I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve been involved in art one way or another ever since- teaching, making and exhibiting. I have shown at various juried shows- the RGI (Glasgow), SSA (Edinburgh), VAS and RSW (Edinburgh). My work’s also been at the RSA open (Edinburgh) and in a number of joint and solo shows. I have a studio in Dumfries.
